Another (Nasty) Paypal phishing scam
I received another ingenious phishing scheme. One of the best so far. This one is really hard to assess whether its really from Paypal to the ill informed as it asks you to download a form, fill it in and hit a submit button. Sneaky!
Here is what it looks like:
Body of email message:

Dear PayPal Customer, During our regularly scheduled account maintenance and verification procedure we have detected a slight error in your PayPal online account. This might be due to the following reasons: 1. A recent change in your personal information (ie. change of address, email address) 2. An inability to accurately verify your selected option of payment due to an internal error within our systems. Please fill in all the details that are required to complete this verification process. To do this we have attached a form to this email. Please download the form and follow the instructions on your screen. NOTE: The form needs to be opened in a modern browser which has javascript enabled (ex: Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 3, Safari 3, Opera 9) Please understand that this is a security measure intended to help protect you and your account. We apologize for any inconvenience. If you choose to ignore our request, you leave us no choice but to temporary suspend your account. Sincerely, PayPal Account Review Department. Please do not reply to this e-mail. Mail sent to this address cannot be answered. For assistance, log in to your PayPal account and choose the "Help" link in the footer of any page.

It seems winter, would be good time to ramp up marketing efforts for online retailers. Since the big freeze in the UK is something we won't see in Australia , it is definitley food for thought

A great article from Chris Thomas of Reseo.com, where he suggests using an affiliate program as a way of getting "deep linked" backlinks to your site. Some good food for thought!

Another Paypal Phishing scheme
I received another cleverly worded and very convincing Paypal phishing email. It purports to be from Paypal suggesting my Paypal account is suspended, and that I need to click on the link to update my records:
HERE IS THE BODY OF THE EMAIL:
The website is a Paypal lookalie hosted somewhere in Russia, and no doubt will happily utilise your password to transfer funds out of your account and heaven knows what else.
Be mindful of any email advising you to log into your account. It is far safer to go to a fresh browser page and key the URL into the address bar and go directly to the site. We've been spoiled with easy links to everything and are thus generally rather lazy. This benefits the scammers out there.
HERE IS THE BODY OF THE EMAIL:
Dear valued PayPal.com.au member,
It has come to our attention that your PayPal.com.au account information needs to be updated as part of our continuing commitment to protect your account and to reduce the instance of fraud on our website. If you could please take 5-10 minutes out of your online experience and update your personal records you will not run into any future problems with the online service.
However, failure to update your records will result in account suspension. Please update your records on or before January 15, 2010.
Once you have updated your account records, your PayPal session will not be interrupted and will continue as normal.
Click here to activate your account |

Digital Ministry - 10 tips on getting an effective e-commerce website in 2010
A nice article with some tips about going online. I would add that anyone looking to start selling online should talk to a lot of people before getting involved as there is a lot to know about selling online, and the technology is just the enabler, it counts for a very small component of the success of the site.
Other elements such as content management, images, search optimisation, marketing, hosting etcplay a vital role in a sites success.
Online retailing is not for the faint hearted.
